What is Laminated Glass?

Laminated glass provides strength and beauty, durability and clarity to meet a wide variety of design needs. Long lasting and versatile, it is the only glazing material that combines the durability and strength of glass with the toughness of plastic.

Laminated glass is made by bonding two more layers of glass, using heat and pressure, with one or more interlayers of polyvinyl butyral resin (PVB). The result is a tough, adaptable glazing material that offers outstanding features to meet a wide variety of design challenges.

Depending on design needs, laminate glass can be man made with sheets of annealed, and/or tempered glass. It is easy to work with and replace, and provides important structural performance features and benefits:

    Safety
Laminated glass by California Glass Bending Corp. resists penetrations from impacts. When broken, the glass adheres to the resilient PVB interlayer, remaining relatively harmless, unlike ordinary glass which may create dangerous shards, or tempered glass, which when broken losses integrity by 'dicing', thus voiding the opening in the structure or vehicle.

    Sound Control
Laminated glass significantly reduces noise transmission. The viscoelastic properties of the interlayer along with it's glass layers provides a damping effect on unwanted noise.

    Energy Control
The use of laminated glass with a tinted interlayer reduces heat gains from sunlight, and can help reduce energy costs. The interlayer can also be blended with tinted and coated glasses to increase it's efficiency.

    UV Control
The PVB interlayer provides controls of UV rays that damage draperies, art and furnishings. It blocks 99.9% of damaging UV rays that are inherent in sunlight.

Bullet Resistant Glass

Bullet Resistant Glass is a standard production item at CGBC.
'BR' is suggested for areas occupied by persons who may be high risk targets of terrorism and personal attack or in areas where money is handled.
Handguns and even more powerful ballistic weapons are being used in many armed robberies and assaults. these readily available weapons account for ever increasing human injury and death both in street crimes and organized terrorist attacks.
Specific security glazing , consisting of laminated glass of appropriate thickness and configuration, and the use of the flexible and bonding aspects of polyvinyl butyral interlayer , can reduce death and injury from bullets in identified high-risk locations and situations while not compromising the aesthetic and vision benefits afforded by glass systems.
All Glass lay-ups of Level I through Level IV are fabricated in-house, with full fabrication available including holes, polishing, polished miters, pattern cuts and the like. CGBC complies to impact test criteria set forth by current industry standards.

Acoustical Glass

Noise reducing acoustical glazing utilizing laminated glass is a Cal Glass Bending mainstay. By adjustments in make-up and variations in interlayers and glass ply configurations, specific noise vibrations can be vastly reduced or virtually eliminated. See the STC Table for descriptions and products addressing these issues.

Security Glass

The safety of personal property and, more importantly, the protection of human life, has become a greater concern in modern society.
Laminated glass is the basic building block for security glazing and is ideal in security sensitive areas, and to prevent smash and grab thefts. Two, three and even more layers, as required, may be laminated together fro increased penetration resistance. Heavier Polyvinyl Butyral Interlayers resist multiple impacts from hand propelled objects and requires much more time and force of attack to gain entry.
This family of products combines the capability of glass to transmit light and high quality images with the unique structural and physical properties of energy-absorbing, high performance plastic. While security glazing can generally be used anywhere ordinary glass is required, it can also be an effective substitute for other construction materials, add light and visibility to many spaces within a facility without compromise of structural integrity.

Insulating Glass Units

Cal Glass Bending fabricates a Class 'A' IG Unit. Typically utilizing a Dual Sealed Structural Silicone secondary sealed unit, these units give exceptional performance and are extremely long lived. Combining energy efficient outboard layers and laminated security enhancing inboard layers, many different needs can be met in a pleasing and effective glazed area. Used in various building locations and constructed in numerous lay-ups, they clearly meet today's complex energy needs along with the project's design requirements. See the SECP Table .
